Discussions with federal government officials concerning age discrimination against older adults, including addressing systemic ageism, implicit bias, and inequitable policy outcomes across federal laws, programs, and regulatory frameworks.
Activities include advocating for a whole-of-government approach to dismantling age-based discrimination; integrating an age-equity lens into all federal legislation, regulations, budget decisions, and program design; ensuring meaningful inclusion of older adults in national policymaking; and promoting equitable access to federally governed supports such as Old Age Security, the Guaranteed Income Supplement, Canada Pension Plan, tax policy, national housing and income supports, consumer protection, and federal health and long-term care initiatives.
Advocacy will also focus strongly on preventing frauds, scams, and financial exploitation of older adults, including strengthening federal oversight of banks and investment providers, enhancing enforcement against digital and telephone scams targeting seniors, improving federal cybersecurity and consumer-protection frameworks, and ensuring that federal agencies (RCMP, CRA, CRTC, FINTRAC, and OSFI) coordinate effectively to protect vulnerable older Canadians from financial harm.
CARP’s work will promote greater accountability across federal institutions and regulators, while advancing reforms that recognize seniors as a diverse population who face intersecting barriers. Activities aim to build a culture of respect, representation, safety, and social inclusion for older adults across all federal systems.
